DESCRIPTION
Undugu International Youth Support (UIYS) is an initiative of Glorious Cross Ministries (GCM) that started in Kenya on September 2022 by Mr. Jean Baptiste Sengayire,a lay Franciscan missionary from Rwanda. The idea was a result in what he realized on the ground about issues faced by the youth.
Some of the issues that prompted Jean Baptiste Sengayire to establish UIYS
were:
• Youth exploitation:
Some youth are manipulated by politicians as tools to serve their self-interests. They use the youth in political violence, demonstrations, banditry...
• Unemployment:
Many youth spend too much time in education but at the end they find themselves in the street due to lack of employment after engaging a lot of resources and time
• High rate of single mothers:
There is a big number of single mothers in the society who are impregnated and left to struggle with the children from the womb till they grow; this creates conflicts in families.
• High consumption rate:
Today's society, especially the youth, have a critical challenge; they don't focus on production or saving but they rather unconsciously consume to a hundred per cent (100%) of what fall in their hands. The youth consume 100% of the resources around them while the proportion percentage of production is almost at zero per cent (0%) hence making them vulnerable for dependency and Consequently lacking self-reliance. This leads them to engage in drug abuse and
other anti-values.
Jean Baptiste that apart from his ministry, the Kenyan society, especially the youth, need
something more than just preaching peace only. This is what inspired him to start Undugu International Youth Support.
